Recognising the merits of the design and development behind the ranges, the Botanical planter screen for LEN by Helen Kontouris, the Adapt modular collection by Ross Gardam and the ThinkingQuietly workstation by ThinkingWorks have all been awarded with the 2018 Good Design Award in the Furniture and Lighting category. Celebrating 60 years this year, Good Design Australia is committed to promoting the importance of design-led innovation to business, industry, government and the general public and overall prosperity of Australia. Below, we take a look into the design narrative behind each of the three Stylecraft awarded products recognised in this year’s Good Design Awards. Congratulations to all winners with a special mention to Helen Kontouris for her gold award winning Botanical Planter.
Botanical planter screens were designed by Helen Kontouris in recognition of the benefits of greenery within urban environments. Constructed with hidden castor wheels for increased mobility, the screens can be used indoors or outdoors, in domestic environments or as a feature in hospitality, workplace or education fit-outs. Resembling the skeletal structure of a leaf, the four are named after native plants reflecting Kontouris’ appreciation of Australian flora.
In designing the Adapt modular collection, designer Ross Gardam focused upon the foremost principal of modular furniture design; adaptability. The Adapt collection is able to be configured in a multitude of ways to suit the specific application and is designed to evolve over time according to the dynamic needs of the user. Highlighting the range’s flexibility, screens can be added to the Adapt lounge to create Adapt High Back Lounge and curved elements to create Adapt Curve. Adapt Ottomans create additional seating options and all unique Adapt configurations can be complemented by the Adapt side and occasional tables.
Finally, the ThinkingQuietly range, designed by ThinkingWorks in collaboration with UK design firm Jones + Partners, combined thorough research into acoustic properties and a contemporary design aesthetic to create a solution that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is practical. Consulting acoustic engineers as part of the design process, advanced materials were selected to create a balanced acoustic environment, while also ensuring a sophisticated and unique design outcome suitable for the modern workplace.
We congratulate Ross Gardam, Helen Kontouris and ThinkingWorks for their dedication to good design and their award-winning products. Stylecraft have been longstanding supporters of Australian designers and manufacturing. In turn we’re proud to be helping shape and strengthen the future of design within Australia.
