The former Mitsubishi manufacturing and assembly site has transitioned into an innovative district connecting businesses. Tonsley centrally locates Flinders Universities School of Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics, with the Medical Device Research Institute and Centre for NanoScale Science and Technology, alongside Tafe SA and some of Adelaide's biggest businesses and industries.

The existing structure of the Main Assembly Building was redeveloped by Woods Bagot. An objective to create a highly flexible mixed use precinct whilst maintaining the industrial heritage has resulted in the creation of a unique destination and contemporary public space.

Winning the 2015 World Architecture News Award for Adaptive Reuse the interconnected and intelligent mixed use precinct has a pod like approach. Pieces such as the Cup Seating Module, Twig Bench and the Pill and Tot bins, often used in collaborative and flexible zones, are used positioned throughout the open space in a sporadic yet strategic approach.

The interior of the teaching and research facility of Flinders at Tonsley was designed by award-winning architectural firm, HASSELL.
